He may be referring to the intra-camshaft timing chain tensioners, AKA the variable valve timing adjuster units. The plastic guides wear over time and VW doesn't sell the guides separately. The VVT unit is about $600 last I looked, but having done probably 50+ 2.7t camshaft jobs I've encountered two VVT units that weren't in useable condition. Porsche does sell the guides for about $15, but I tried them one time and they are about 2mm too big to fit tightly in place. If it were my car I'd make the Porsche ones work.
