flat towing a front wheel drive car

Removing the axles will also allow the bearings to pull apart...You would
have to reinstall stub axles consisting of just the other CV joint.  (Yes I
have done this)

Since the car is auto - just rent a tow dolly for the day.  They can be had
fairly cheap.
