Audi 90 Quattro 1990 Engine Damage

My beloved Quattro was running OK at 300 k untill stolen and damaged by 
a joyrider. My question is; can excessive revving damage the crankshaft 
and/or the rods. In a cursory inspection the valve train proved to be 
OK. The engine was still running but making a terrible rattling noice in 
tact with the engine speed. Any ideas? R.S.V.P. Olli.
