Looking at one that is for sale.

Some questions...

- timing belt in gront or chains in back?
- what are the signs of looming trans/torque converter failure?
- airbag light is on, a typical thing?

Thanks in advance.
Ed

Hi Ed, that's the first year of the chain drive V8 engine. You didn't mention mileage, but they seem to be more durable than the S4 V8 engines of similar vintage.
I've got two Allroad V8 here(drivers) with 155k and 200k on them with original chain gear still intact, can hear the clicking of a wearing cam adjuster though.

Transmissions aren't a common problem either, but keep an eye out for recurring torque converter codes, any slippage, and consider a tailshaft seal(almost always leaking a bit in any Quattro automatic of that vintage.

Airbag light would need a scan to diag, but nothing too expensive there either, most common thing I can recall is seatbelt resistance in the rear belts. Never got the light back on until she buckled up the kid seat :)
