MC-1 vs. MC-2 engines

I've long assumed that the MC-2 camshaft was a performance upgrade for the
MC-1 engine. But I now realize I don't really know why this might be. The
base part numbers are the same (034 109 021) while the suffix letter(s) of
the MC-1 camshaft is "A" while they are "AK" for the MC-2 part. And the
official rated hp for both engine types is the same at 165.
I will check SJM's site as well as my own Q-List archive for information
but if anyone has some wisdom to share in this matter, it would be most
welcome.
