The diagnosis was 100% accurate.  A sincere thanks to all of you.
Ignition switch broke, stuck in "start" position, and fried the starter.
$130 for starter & switch + 2 hours install and all is well!

The plastic electrical portion of the ignition switch broke from fatigue at
the return spring.  You can't see this until you take it out of the car.
Apparently the original part has been superceded to a "B" sffix which has a
different return spring design.

Bob, it's the switch sticking in "start". Mine did EXACTLY the same
thing, blew the starter, had to pop-start it with the help of a couple
of guys stronger than I am. Replaced the starter and the switch (which
is a 10-20$ Porsche part, btw).

Stalling? Well, that part I'm less certain of....
