Bill:
I'm not kidding. Ignition switch is a $20 part 4a0 xxx 849(b) (Don't
remember the number) & it was installed in 45 minutes.
My guess at the time on each procedures follows:
1) remove Instrument Cluster (btdt many times, only takes a few minutes.)
2) Pop off connector on switch ( maybe 1 minute?)
3) loosen two set screws which hold it in place -- the job could have gone
MUCH quicker, because these are covered in red goo, & can't be seen. I
wasted time trying to get a small Allen wrench to catch through the goo, but
wasn't getting anywhere. Once I cleaned some goo away, I saw (w/inspection
mirror) that I needed a small straight screwdriver, not the Allen key I was
trying to use. ( about 20 minutes wasted here)
4) Pop out old, pop in new. ( 2 minutes)
5) Tighten set screws, drip in some loctite. ( 2 minutes)
Stop and change starter -- About 1 hour/1 hour 15 minutes.
6) Test and replace IC. (10 minutes)
I put the car on the Rhino ramps at 6 pm and was washing up by 8 pm. And
yes, I did use my Kmart BENCHTOP socket set, which I still HIGHLY RECOMMEND
since it's as good as craftsman (my guess is same TAIWANESE supplier) at
about 1/2 the price. (I've got a Snap-on set too, but they're too pretty to
use & too expensive to loose.) So go ahead, FLAME AWAY about my choice of
tools!

Bob,
Ref. above has me a bit concerned for sure. Just a matter of time?
Minutes?
He he.
But seriously, What $20 (part #) did you replace in only an hour that
would circumvent this potential problem? An Hour? The ignition recall
fix looked positively scarey.
Hmm although you do have those nice kmart tools:)
should I do anything here or just wait :-O
BTW ordered Toms BIg "silvers" yesterday. ouch ! But I'll be a great
poser.
Thinkin all I need are the Fast Flame simulated bullet holes for that
true Chicago look:)
