the harbor freight aluminum jack arrived today. i was surprised by
the level of quality. harbor freight tools and equipment are usually
slightly greasy and weird smelling, with casting flash and cheap
ugly paint. the manual was written in normal english rather than the
pseudo-english i'm used to seeing in manuals for products made in
china.
this jack was aluminum, nicely finished and even had handles on both
sides so it could be picked up. it was actually pretty. it also worked
perfectly. another nice touch was the rubber insert in the saddle. they
also included a bleeder screw.
of course, i had to test drive it, so after using it to lift karl, i put
it under his car. after getting the saddle pressed against the car, it
took a half pump to preload the saddle (my guess is that much of it was
the rubber insert compressing), and then one full stroke put the front
wheel one or two inches up in the air. that's a quick ratio.
looks good so far. i'll use it in the garage a few times just to make
sure it's not going to break, and then save it for use at the track only.
i already have a floor jack, and i don't want to wear out the race jack.
assuming it doesn't break, i give it two thumbs up. i look forward to
_not_ breaking my back lifting the jack in and out of the car.
