Bjorn,
 I have the leather,alcantara seats in my S4 Avant and find them to be nearly as bad as the leather in breathability. I agree that excellent quality cloth is far better than leather.
 The US perception stems from the 1960's when a (cheap)chevrolet had cloth and a Cadillac had leather. Come to think of it though some Caddies had gorgeous cloth interiors!
