paul,

from what you've said, it sounds like the retainer engages the stepped
portion of the strut shaft.  its purpose is two-fold: first, to engage
the top of the bump rubber, and second, to spread compression loads from
the strut over the bottom of the strut mount.

it looks like the retainer passes through the torrington bearing to
press directly against the bottom of the strut mount.  does it protrude
up through the "concave support" (which has six studs sticking out of
it)?
