[s-cars] Internal fluids - again, PLUS a little commentary on the new NOKIAN HAKKA C2

Rich, Gary et al,
I'm running Redline MT90 in the tranny and Redline 75W-90 in the rear diff.
Shifting IS notchy going from 1st to 2nd only. 2nd back into 1st is fine,
and so forth. Take it easy going into 2nd in the cold - allow the synchro's
to let you in. If you try and force it, it feels ugly. I have run the same
combo in all my Audi's, but the S6 is the notchiest. Notchiness goes away
once the TRANNY is WARM, which can take too long if you commute in the city,
and live where ambient temps can hover around -10F to 10F for months.
Last weekend, while in Vermont, I saddled up my new set of 225/45/17 Hakka
C2's, complete with eco-studs (cough, geez doc, you got your whole fist up
there? thank you - may I have another?). They are offered studded only.
Snowing like mad - should have seen me navigating to the shop in my Pole
S03's. Amazing how quattro will get you going, and after that, you are
simply at the mercy of, well, nothing.
In the snow, two words describe the new Nokian Hakka C2's - F*CK YEAH! On
pavement, well, they are a tad LOUD and squirrely, to say the least. Give
yourself room to stop, and cut your normal speeds by 10mph.
I had the opportunity to try the tires out in powder, packed powder, and
slush, but no ice. We'll wait for the ice at Tim O'Neil's winter school.
In the snow, lateral grip and turn-in are sensational, especially for a 225
snow. Channels slush with ease up to about 55 mph, then they get a little
light. I wish I could turn off the ABS on the S6.
On the dry pavement, lateral grip & turn-in are poor, but this is offset by
the fact that the studs eliminate almost all understeer. <<grin>> Want
less understeer? Forget rear swaybar, uprated front bar, threaded
coilovers, etc. Thread some screws into your rear tires.
If you get into the boost out of a turn at night, have someone in the back
hang their head out the window to see if you are throwing sparks. When you
light 'em up on the pavement, the whirl sends chills down my spine.

Gary:
Did you use BG Synchroshift or Synchroshift II?? From what I gather,
Synchroshift is a mineral oil and is no longer made, while Synchroshift
II is fully synthetic. See http://www.bgprod.com/autodrive.html for
details. Unlike the Redline oils (see
http://www.redlineoil.com/products.htm), BG does not offer very much
technical or application information on their web site.
I'd also be interested in the experience of others specifically with the
S4, I've had very good luck with Redline MT-90 in my 200, I'm looking to
replace the fluid in my S4 but haven't decided which way to go.

synchoshift and have no more problems.

against it? With tranny warmed up, I'd say both shift equally smooth.

>Hi all

use BG products in their Audi's? I

Problem is the BG people dont
>recommend it... They say use their Ultra Guard product which is a 75-90
GL-5 rated synthetic. They also >say it can be used in GL-4
applications. .... Can anybody please confirm:
>Trans- GL-4 ONLY, 75-90wt, 2.9liters - How important is the ONLY? Diff
- GL-5, 90wt, 0.8liter. Thanks
