[s-cars] Scar heater flaps

In response to several inquiries regarding pulling the climate control
diagnostics, it's described in detail in Bentley and also in
www.12v.org/maint/cc.html I haven't checked if all the codes for the
12V are identical to that of the S4, but in the case of the Air Flow
Flap Motor (V70) and the Footwell/Defroster Motor Flap Motor (V85)
(#12-#15) they were correct and agreed with the VAG-COM diagnostics and
with the Bentley. There are some other neat diagnostics (e.g. engine
coolant temperature) that can be accessed while you're at it.

To replace the motors, you need to pull the center console, not a
pleasant experience. As far as lubricating the linkages, remove the
glove compartment assembly and the driver's side kneebar. The two
motors are mounted on a support tray behind the center console. It
would probably help to remove the left and right defroster hoses from
the heater box to get better access. Best picture is on V 87-69 in
Bentley. The central air flap motor has a blue connector and the
linkage is color coded blue and mounts on top of the tray and is on the
passenger side, the footwell/defroster flap motor has a red connector
with red linkage and is on the driver's side. There's another set of
linkages on top and bottom of the tray which directly connect to the
motors, having had it apart I think these are less likely to be binding,
I think the blue and red linkage are more likely to bind and are much
easier to get at without complete disassembly. I have some photographs
I took of mine which might help, e-mail me if anyone would like them, it
makes this explanation a lot more obvious. This should at least get you
close enough to make sure the linkage is not binding. I sprayed mine
with silicone before reassembling, the linkages worked smoother after
that. I can't guarantee how well these can be accessed without pulling
the center console out, as you would need to do if you were to replace
them, but it's worth a try to at least get some lubricant on the
linkages, if that in fact is the problem.
