[s-cars] 1/4 mile results

Calvin,
My situation is complicated by the fact that my car is a Cq with an AAN
motor and an OE S2 intrument cluster.
The gears are shorter, but I'm still reading too high by about 1-1.5k in
the upper range.
I didn't hear back from anyone when I originally announced to the list
that my Cq was suffering from the same "tach-itis" that has infected a
few other s-cars.
Do these tach irregularities *ever* get resolved?
It's funny....
Even though I *know* that the rpm's are reading high, I can't deprogram
myself to shift after redline.
So (sub)consciously I switch up just as the needle smacks the false
redline, which keeps me comfy in the powerband through the gears.
Case in point:
This morning I walked on an '02 E55 from 0 to about 135km/h...
I was crawling on him until I switched to 3rd at "redline", then it was
bye-bye.
He must have known what a regular Cq was capable of because the look on
his face was priceless. :-)

Andrew,
This doesn't surprise me....a lot of the tachs I have seen in S-Cars are
off. Some are low, some are high. Mine is a "little" high by about 3%.
This can be checked in two ways. One is just simply by doing a
calculation which depends on your tire circumference, the other is to
get an inductive timing light with a digital tach. Of course the
numbers I was quoting were for a 5 speed....with a 6 speed I "think" the
3rd gear is a bit different but I am not sure.

Chad,
Actually your tach may be off if you think you are at 7200 rpm at 96
mph. You should be taching about 6600 rpm at 96.

Thanks to all who checked out the results. Calvin, I agree with you
about lost time shifting, but for a halfway decent track there was no
marker for the end of the 1/4 mile--it was impossible to judge how long
to stay in 3rd gear. My best estimate put me crossing the mark at about
7200 rpm where my car makes NO power; shifting at 6700 would have put me
in 4th in the high 4k rpm's where it makes really good power. What's
weird is 1st pulls strong, 2nd is a little less, 3rd starts to feel
kinda weak, then 4th pulls strong again almost like a 50 shot of NOS.
The loud factor from Bubba in the next lane was definitely an issue. I
actually missed 2 calls to stage because nobody could hear the
announcers. The tires I was running were Yok AVS 245/45ZR16 and gave me
too much grip. Anyone with the MTM setup notice a 3rd gear weak/4th
gear strong issue? Nothing way out of line, I just didn't expect much
pull in 4th @ 100 compared to what 3rd gave me.
Thanks,
Chad Hall
