Two things can happen Bob. First, a cold torsen will not like to
differentiate driveshaft speeds, since if you increase the viscocity of the
fluid in the trans, you decrease the Bias Ratio. As you do this, the front
tire will slip. It will slip more if the tire is cold, and even more if the
torsen is cold, more if you are using a high gear ratio (1st or reverse).
This isn't anything new to any awd application. Since you may not have
reached the maximum travel of the helix gears, the noise from the center diff
may not be apparent, the noise from the tire could be.

The torsen was my first suspect, but the noise sounds as if it is coming from
the wheel, not the center fo the car. Yesterday, someone posted about cold
tires, and I'm now thinking he might have been right. When I left my office
last night, I easily replicated the sound. I tried again leaving the parts
store ( buying Audi parts, of course), and could not replicate it for my
buddy there, nor could it replicate the sound when I reached home. It
might just be cold tires.
