[s-cars] Torsens is there a difference ??!!

Hi Frank:
I'm not so sure that Mr. Kluge (the Head Engineer
of Quattro transmissions before he retired and set
up shop) would be so interested in discussing the
minut details of the Torsen. I'll ask him everything
he knows about the differences in Torsens..
I do know this: in 1986 Audi began getting a lot of
transmissions coming in under warranty because
the locking actuators would rust and mess up the
ABS system.
Mr. Kluge told me that Audi has 3 choices:
1. Redesign the whole transmission and put the
actuator inside the transmission.
2. Stop offering ABS on Quattro models.
3. Find something else.
They found Torsen.
He personally doesn't like the Torsen much
because it transfers torque back and forth too
much (his comment not mine) and has some other
major drawbacks like if one axle completely looses
traction, the car won't move. With a locker, you
could lock the center diff and still move the car.
Having said that, the 01E is 3x stronger than the
old Gen1 Quattro, so I would rather have a 01E
than a 016 behind a tuned 20V turbo... You can't
convert a 01E to a locker he told me.
I'll ask Mr. Kluge more about the Torsen next time
I pick up one of my rebuilt CRBs...
Kind Regards
Rob
