[s-cars] ABS...what does it sound like????

Hello all.

Apparently I've never activated it before so it has gone unnoticed. But it
actually snowed in NJ yesterday and I happened to slam on the brakes for
the fun of it.  The car came to a stop rather nicely, but the ABS sounded
like some serious funk was going on. Basically sounded like a failed
attempt at clutchless shifting, lotsogrinding.  I know that there is a
pulsating that occurs, and it did, but the noise was rather unexpected. Is
this normal? And no the sound was not coming from the trans.
