And, as Charlie pointed out, there are several methods to do this.  I'd
suggest if anyone feels this is a problem in a quattro, you check out some of
the truck transmission rebuilders, they are quite used to building high
torque mainshafts.  My brother used one to one of these when the main shaft
on his Stealth tt (common problem in that car) gave up it's teeth all
together.

However, fixing the mainshaft problem will move the problem downstream, or
just create another one.  As you can see from the "H" and "J" shafts, even
audi was grappling with this over the years.
