I just went through this with shox.com (ASI, Inc.). Had installed a set of HD's with the stock '93 springs in January 2000 and ~25k miles ago. About two months ago the ride changed pretty dramatically. The car started "booming" over bumps and the front end seemed considerably stiffer. Had my favorite local shop check it out and they were 99% sure a shock was bad.
I called shox and the options were to buy another pair, install them, ship the original pair back, and they would send to Bilstein for testing or pull-out the original pair, ship them back, and wait to hear from Bilstein. Obviously, the second option would leave the car undriveable. I went with option one. It took them about 6 weeks, but supposedly a check was sent this week to reimburse me for the second set of shocks I bought since the originals were found to be defective. You should be almost absolutely sure that it's the shocks though because if they find that the shocks are good, they'll send them back to you. So, you could end up with an extra pair and money spent. Also, the guys at shox are very helpful and nice, but you have to initiate all contact and keep checking on the status.
