And quality far inferior, judging by some of the recent Bosch parts I have
bought and had fail :)

You also have to consider that back in '92, VAG and Bosch didn't have
parts plants in the Czech Republic, Hungary and other places where labor
is far cheaper than Germany.

Funny you should mention this, Chris. I have had a couple of friends
with similar overall experiences. My question would be this. In 1992
our S-Cars were a strong $45k. An S4 today costs about the same thing.
Hmmmm.....am I to believe that all the inflation over the last 10 years
has been offset by "productivity gains", with no shortcuts as to quality
and durability. I think not. Don't get me wrong, I still think they
are about the best bet out there in this price range, but the cars are
simply do not have the same attention to detail or quality standards.
All I have to say is who was the hired on Ford engineer who brought the
integral wastegate on the K03 with him and when is he being fired...oh
that's right they decided to get rid of the turbo on the 2.7T rather
than the engineer. --Calvin

I have a 2002 A4 1.8TQM with about 12k miles on it. Just had another
ignition coil go bad on it. This is the second one. They fail without
warning. Seems to be a big problem at the moment with a lot of 1.8s.
Dealerships can't keep enough coils in stock. And, AoA states that the
car has to be flatbedded in to the dealer for repair. Have also had
other little problems with it; washer fluid pump bad, lower driver's
seat bracket replaced (not fixed yet though) very notchy second gear.
If I was in your shoes, don't think I'd look at the new model A4's until
all the bugs are worked out. And, they are supposed to have a 190 hp
1.8t on the way (as opposed to the 170hp) So, this morning, I backed
the 95 S6 around the broken down A4 and went to work, Only to have the
flatbed fairy take it to the dealer to be fixed, again. One more time
and it's a lemon in my state. Just my 2 cents.
