Bill,
Pop the mirror off the base.  Make sure it is warmed up a bit (at least room
temp) then grab hold of the base and pull it STRAIGHT up, perpendicular.
DO NOT do this outside in the cold and be sure to pull it straight out.  If
its done in the cold and popped out on an angle the plastic tabs will break.
Guess how I know:/
To re-install .. apply adhesive to the base, stick the on windshield and hold
for a minute or so.  IIRC I think it cures for a short while.  Then make sure
mirror is warm, hold base with securely with one hand and pop the mirror back
on.
While this may sound challenging, its really alot easier than driving around
with a taped up broom handle.
Good luck and of course only look back to check for black n whites:)
