[s-cars] Strange water temp behavior

Water temp stay just above the three thick line on my gauge: T-Stat or MFTS,
right?
But in heavy traffic, the water temp goes just above the 90C mark: MFTS is
OK, should be the T-Stat, right?
But, any time except during hard driving, the oil temp stay just above the
90C mark, whatever the water temp gauge says, so what?

I had exactly the same problem on my 90Q20V. I first changed the MFTS as I
also had erratic reading. The water temp came back to 90C for a few weeks
then fall down to the same place, the first 3 thick line on the highway w/
lower reading on cold weather. So I changed the T-stat. Nothing changed. And
during all these changes, the oil reading stay exactly at the same place,
just above 90C.

I don't want to start all over again with the S6 with the same result, ie
nothing. The Audi dealer said the gauge needs calibrating but, you know,
it's an Audi dealer. If the gauge was so bad, why would I have exactly the
right reading, 2mm above 90C when I let the car idling for a while.

I don't like to see the water temp saying the motor is too cold, w/ all the
effect on the head life-time, cat, and mpg. But I don't want to waste time
and money on parts which are just fine and the oil temp says everyting is
OK. I'm really puzzled.

Any help?

Vincent.
