City/Town lights were also the law in the UK. Some cars had a switch that
illuminated only one side, front and rear, for parking on streets, to
conserve battery power. City lights were still required  as late as the
early 60s when I came to Canada. Many cars sold in the UK today have DRLs,
as we have in Canada, so things have obviously changed.
