I disagree with this statement. It is probably to prevent nonprofessionals
from copying it.

It seems if you plan on only doing one upgrade O.K., but if you plan on doing
multiple upgrades I would insist on sockets in my ECU, else your are exposing
your ECU to unnecessary ESD (use grounded soldering irons to reduce this).
Early 1992s (like mine) came socketed from the factory and I would be livid
if someone took out the factory socket and soldered in a chip.

Nothing against Ned but if he changes his policy on this I may consider his
solution one day.
