For those of you who are interested, attached are 4 images taken of the inner
wheel well (both from the wheel well and the engine compartment) where the
rack bolts up on the driver's side. They show the cracks associated with my
problem (circled). Both the inner fender sheet metal as well as the
reinforcing plate are cracked. Repair is going to require some significant
surgery. FYI, the reinforcement plate is not available as a separate item
from Audi. If you go with new parts you need to buy a complete inner fender
(gulp!). What will supposedly be done to repair mine is: cut out the bad
section, weld in a good section from a wreck with additional reinforcements
to strengthen the whole area. If the '97 improvements can be documented I
would like to show this to Greg's (Autofirm) brother at Karmann Auto Body
(also in Amenia NY). Greg has agreed to document the whole repair. I'll be
loaning him my digital camera.

BTW, when I was in Greg's shop to pick up the S6 he was working on a Ferrari
456. What an idle! Having never listened to a V-12 before, it was amazing,
hardly any extraneous sound, very turbine-like.

Regards,

Mike Bess
'95 S6 (creaky steering awaiting surgery)
