I have heard the same from a dealer in VA.  If you are willing to wait you
can order a 6 speed for US delivery. Expect at least one year wait time as
the cars are being pre programmed for the US DOT spec and this prevents
drive train option changes.

You may have to pay more than the toke $500 deposits that dealers ask for
with the order as the car will (in Audi's opinion) be unsaleable if you walk
away from the deal.
