land Rovers don't make me laugh. A long time ago, LR had the Outback market=
to themselves. However, in that environment the distances are so great, th=
e temperature is so hot and water is neary a drop if your car brakes down y=
ou die - today they all drive Toyota. I love my LWB Land Cruiser and if yo=
u have a campsite and it rains, three adults can sleep in theback on a flat=
floor. Its tough, its reliable and I beat all that LR crap in towing on ba=
d surfaces and feel safe crossing deap rivers.
As for the misbegotten G Class, don't make me laugh - fathered by a camel o=
ut of a three-legged dog. The only guy I know who ever bought one was pig-h=
eaded and German, even he junked it for a Land Cruiser. Over engineered unc=
omfortable, uneconomical POS, terrible fuel consumption, not good on hard g=
oing, body drums. On the other hand get one, all your buddies will buy you =
drinks as you tell them how awful it is - no amount of tarting up can disgu=
ise its true awfulness, but it is rare!

Speaking of shift knobs....
Having just bought a camp property on a mountain accessed by a "primitive"
road, well, logging trail. I am looking for a vehicle with a bit more
ground clearance than an Allroad - a LOT more. A new Hummer dealership has
opened nearby so my wife and I stopped in. Believe it or not, it was her
idea! Getting to the point, I sat in the H2 and it has this HEFTY looking
aluminum shift lever. On closer inspection it turns out to be cheap
plastic! This immense 8000+ lb beast cost $50k+ and has a cheesey plastic
interior. This is the vehicle that should have that depleted uranium knob
;-)

Peter-
Get yourself down to the MBZ dealership and take a look
at the Gelandewagen- aka G-Class. Plenty of ground clearance
and a very capable off-roader. You won't have to worry about
cheesy plastic bits, it's very well outfitted.
Of course, stupid yuppies haven't figured out yet that this
truck is a pretty poor excuse for an on-road vehicle as the
compromises made for off-road capability are exactly what makes
it poor for on-road driving- tall, relatively narrow body, lots
of suspension travel.
They're a bit more than $50k (more like $70-80k), but this is
a vehicle made by Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Graz, Austria, originally
designed for the Austrian military, later adapted for civilian use
and outfitted in massive quantities of wood and leather in the mid-90s
when the Gelandewagen was put under the auspices of the passenger
car division of Daimler-Benz. Truly a nice piece of engineering by
the guys at MBZ.
Otherwise look for a clean Land Rover Defender 110.
