Mark,
As far as I know the VAG 1551/2 tool is one way to reset those service
reminders. However, you can also use the VAG-COM software from Ross-Tech
(see www.ross-tech.com). This software package runs on Windows-based PC's
and emulates the VAG 1551/2 diagnostic tool. It is quite good and will
reset those service reminders (as well as many other functions). You will
need to get an appropriate connector/adapter for your car and even the
free-demo software (albeit limited functionality -- it can still reset
those service reminders). But, the full-function software is what you
will really want once you see all of its capabilities.
The service reminder intervals are a combination of time and mileage.
There are variables that are stored in the car's computer that will count
down the number of miles and/or the amount of months until the reminder is
displayed. For example if you want to change your oil in 5,000kms, then
you set the appropriate variable to 5 (the factory sets it to 12) and the
computer will count down until 5000kms have been recorded on the odo and
then it will display the reminder. Other reminders are based on time. So
for example the "In 0" reminder comes up in 360 days after it has been
reset, so there is another variable that stores the number of days
(x10)... ie. the stored variable will hold 36.
