[s-cars] Oil Smoke on startup

I have about the same symptoms, guess it's just a valvestem sealing job that
might fix it. Since the car really don't use any oil, I just let it puff a
bit. No big deal I guess. (It's just a few seconds with my car, that is, but
i still lay a thin smokescreen just when I leave home..)
A quick test: Some 10 seconds in >4000 revs in third, let off on the pedal,
wait till around 1500 revs (negative boost) and floor it. If there's more
smoke, it's probably coming in through the stem sealings. especially if you
don't seem to loose any oil. (My car don't do that, so yours might be a bit
longer on the way, but it's often a sure sign.)
The oil on the plugs are a good sign that you should put in a new gasket, I
will do the same on my 200kkms '92 S4 this evening, along with new plugs and
plug ends! :o) (I'll remember to re-tighten after a while!!) And then I'll
order a timing belt tune-up (or order the parts, anyway, since the job would
run at about $800..)
Regards,
Bjorn :o)

Hi all,
This is the first time I have posted, although I have enjoyed the list for 2
years.
I have a 93 S4 with 120,000 miles. Recently, the car has begun to puff an
oil based smoke when the car is started after sitting for ~8 hours. The
smoke, which blooms like a big cloud, only lasts for about 15-30 seconds,
then it disappears for good.... The (stock) car pushes 15.5 PSI and vacuum
at idle is 18.
The car has a new bypass valve and when pressure tested, did bleed a little
air at 5psi "somewhere" in the back of the motor (near the firewall). We
couldn't find exactly where, but you can hear a gurgling noise for sure.
There is also some oil stains (not really leaking) on the back of the engine
closer to the passenger side. Also, there is oil in the spark plugs wells.
The number 2 plug was covered in oil up to the tip, the others have just a
little. This means a new valve cover gasket, right?
I am thinking that oil is somehow leaink into the intake/cylinders and what
I see is that oil burning off at startup. Are there any common failures
that I should look for? Where should I look? I mean, it is really
embarressing! What should I do next?
Thank you oh great list, Quinn
