I know the cars are very light and if I had the means, I'd buy one
solely for track
use- Sun Int'l. supposedly sells Elises here w/ JDM Integra Type-R
motors installed,
makes for an even better car than the original Elise. With a full roll
cage and kevlar
seats, I wouldn't be too worried for track use, I'd feel uncomfortable
driving one on
public roads as you mentioned.

As it stands, I'd probably get a Miata for a track car- inexpensive,
easy to maintain,
good handling, lots of aftermarket stuff.
