[s-cars] Front Shocks

I've seen the front shock cartridges replaced from the top with the strut still in place, but have never done it myself.  For those that have,  and probably didn't have the special tool, what did you use to remove the nut at the base of the cartridge (pipe wrench)?
Also, can the upper strut mount and bearing be removed from the top as well?
