[s-cars] header wrap

Had some help with this explaination (Redneck friend, Drag racer type)

I havent read Corky's book either, don't even know who he is... :) Your heat
shield does not function the same as header wrap, the heat shield is
designed to protect the parts near the exhaust and keep the interior of your
car nice and cool. Since I installed my Stromung, I have noticed an increase
in heat comming from the floor of the car near the downpipe. Header wrap is
designed to keep heat in the exhaust. Header wrap will also act as a heat
shield. This is not its main purpose however. The main reason for heat
wrapping the downpipe AND turbine housing is it helps promote exhaust
scavenging. This decreases the chances of reversion (exhaust gases being
sucked back into the combustion chamber) and therefore detonation. Trust me,
it is a worthwile and inexpensive upgrade. the way I accomplished this was
to wrap the turbine housing (exhaust side) as best I could (not easy) and
then wrap the downpipe down to the cat. Don't bother wrapping the cat. As
soon as I install my RS2 onto my S6 (previous car was a 200 20v) I will wrap
everything up. I am thinking about going with a cat bypass, in which case I
will likely wrap the exhaust furher down the system.

>I haven't read Corky Bell's book, so please explain to me (cliff's notes
>version if you'd please) how wrapping the downpipe can reduce lag. I ask
>this since I recently removed the stock "heat shield" from my downpipe, as
>it had gotten corroded and noisy.
