Paul-
Taken from a post a while back on the BIRA list, I don't consider this
proprietary (GregA, please don't kill me). :-O

So here's a rundown on how to index a rotor. After you do this on one
side, it goes a bit quicker on the other.
1.) Since it's not known which rotor is causing the vibration (floating
or fixed caliper), you start with one side and in this example, the
driver side front, and jack up the drivers side wheel and support with a
jackstand .
2) Rotate the wheel and listen carefully for when or if there is a point
on the rotor that changes sound like it's not rubbing against the brake
pads; this takes awhile (in fact, if it sounds consisent, it might be
the other side); have a grease pen or sharpie to mark the beginning and
the end of the "quiet" spot.
3) Take off the wheel and mark each hole on the rotor, 1-5 in a
clockwise direction.. Temporarily use a lug nut to secure the rotor to
the hub while you remove the caliper.
4) Remove the rotor carefully, noting the position of the holes; where
you marked "1" on the rotor, mark a "1" on the corresponding hole on the
hub; then 2-5 in the same clockwise direction.
5) Completely clean both the mating surfaces of the rotor and the hub;
if necessary, use a wire wheel brush on a drill to remove all dirt and
grime; follow up with Brake-kleen spray and wipe down. Be careful with
the marks; Brake-Kleen removes them.
6) Find the quiet spot you marked and note it's relative location to the
numbers on the rotor and rotate the position 180 deg. or as close as
opposite as you can get. So if the quiet spot was just under the #1
spot, rotate that spot to the #3 spot on the hub.
7) Bolt everything back up except the wheel, but use three wheel lugs
and tighten down the rotor. Rotate the rotor again. A few things may
happen:
a) The rubbing is now 'constant' which means you probably have the hub
oriented correctly. Bolt the wheel back on and drive it. Chances are you
might have corrected the problem.
b) There is no change or it get's worse; then perhaps, you have a warped
rotor.
c) It get's maybe 90% better: at this point, you can try to rotate the
#1 spot to position #4 on the hub and try again. If it feels the same,
perhaps the rotors could be shaved just slightly to get it line up.
8) Repeat step 1-7 on the other side now.

>>> Well, I just learned from my Mercedes/volvo mechanic about the
simple
procedure called 'indexing'...it actually helped!
Can you explain the procedure?

Yes, that's right, I hate them and now I am starting to hate my car!
Anyone want a S6 with 51k miles? Take it please. Not really. So as
previously posted, I am having some vibrations (making a humming noise)
coming from my front end. (993 carrera calipers, S6+ rotors) It almost
sounds like a wheel bearing, but it is not. It is the pad hanging up on
the rotor. I replaced my aluminum brackets with RS2 steel brackets with
some custom made spacers. Nothin'. I called Dave Jones (he has seen
this, however only on URS6s, not on URS4s), he said to file down the
leading edge of the pad, well, tonight I did that, nothin'. The sound
(which I can feel vibrations in the steering wheel and floorboard)
actually got worse. My next step is to turn the rotors, then move them
left to right, to reverse the direction of the slots, which are now
facing away from the direction that the rotor is spinning (I've seen
both ways) . If this does not work, its new brakes time. I am thinking
996 turbo calipers over Porsche rotors. How does this work? Do you need
a new hat (not for your head silly)? Anyone have any suggestions????
PLEASE?????????
Paul "Stupid frickin piece of $HiT $#@#%&#&$&$" Friedenberg
PS, I might want to sell my car, but I will set it on fire first
