Hi Bob;
As Dave says, when the gauge gets into the reserve area, the idiot light
comes on. From your description, it sounds like your gauge drops to empty
after it gets below 1/4 full. This will indeed activate the light. You
might have a problem with the in-tank sender - maybe it has a bad sector or
bad contact in the last segment of its travel. I don't know if high
resistance equals empty or full on the gauge, but if it is empty, an open
circuit will show empty on the gauge.

Subject: [s-cars] Screwy Fuel Gauge - Data
Robert: I see no one else replied. All I can add is it seems (to me)
that when the fuel warning symbol (gas pump icon) does appear in the
info panel, your gauge should be in the red "Reserve" area and you will
have 15 liters of fuel left (3.78 L/US gal, 4.54 L/Imp gal). I have
"tested" this a few times (sometimes on purpose) and have been amazed
how consistent the 15 L (65 L to fill) remaining has been.
Hope this helps.
Dave F.
