[s-cars] Check Engine Light etc

Hi all
Last night my check engine light on our 1995.5 S6 Avant came on as my
wife was driving home.
After dinner I went out for a drive and the light went out.
Everything seemed fine - no unusual noise or behavoirs - smooth idle.
I went ahead and checked the fault codes per the instructions on the
auto tech site.
I got one fault code - 2113 (cam position sensor or distributor
alignment ?)
I have a few questions -
1) If the check engine light comes on but then goes out on its own, does
this mean the faulty device is intermittent?

2) Are all fault codes stored regardless weather or not a device is
currently faulty. Would a intermittent device produce a fault code
which would remain stored even if the device is not currently faulty and
check engine light is off. (As I have only owned this cas a few weeks, I
am not sure if there were any stored codes from the previous owner)

3) Should I erase the codes buy removing fuse on ECU and wait and see if
any codes(s) come up again? What about "learned ignition timing and
adaptive fuel mixtures" - will these reset themselves after a few
miles?

4) What are symptoms of code 2113?

5) This self diagnosis is amazing! Do other modern cars have such a
system where the owner can trace a fault without fancy equipment or is
this why we become Audi nuts?

Thanks for all your wisdom
