It's key that *anyone* building a motor get this exactly right. I know of a
shop that didn't... We are speaking of the ROD BEARING, not the CRANK
BEARING. On the ROD bearing, the load is on the downstroke of the piston,
which loads the UPPER rod bearing (you are thinking of the lower crank
bearing). 034 105 701B is the hardened upper rod bearing that MUST be used
on the top, or instant motor failure will result (about 10minutes running if
memory serves above). Since the only difference between 034 105 701 and 701B
is the hardening of the B suffix shell, you *can* (per Colin's question) put
the hardened 701B top and bottom rod bearing to make a stronger motor.
Colin the bearing top/bottom backwards in error, you are just thinking about
the wrong load point.

LOWER half of the bearing thus requiring the harder material on the lower
half or
