A stud is threaded from both ends, usually with an unthreaded part near
the center.  While a sawed-off bolt may do, it may require some thread
grinding on the cutoff end.

Normally, studs are removed with a stud puller.  I think Sears has them,
among others.  Ideally, you would get new studs from Audi or a source of
metric hardware.
