...and the answer is...
a) I tried every "tool" available in the Pep Boys rack save the $20 gizmo
with three fingers. By this time the filter has several holes in it and
every single tool gets a bite---but no budge.
b) Decided to give her one more go, before calling for the tow truck...
c) get the car up a little----tough enough job without the extra handicap of
a lowered suspension.
d) With big honking screwdriver firmly skewered through middle AND the oil
filter wrench applied at the same time, I was able to get some movement
(about 2 degrees). However that was enough to instill confidence....
e) 10 minutes later the filter spins off easily
Summary, when one technique fails you, try two techniques at the same time.
Oh, and don't underestimate the holding power of a rubber gasket!
Can't wait until next time.

I have used very large slip joint pliers with great success. Actually, I
don't own a filter wrench except for my Motorcycle.
