Folks,
this past Friday I have done the front outer CV joint boots in my UrS6.
I would like to thank everyone who responded.
I am especially grateful to Mark Turczyn for his detailed instructions.
And, BTW, he was the only one who said that neither the lower ball joint
nor the sway bar needded to be disconnected, and he was absolutely right
about it. This [greasy, messy yacky] job was indeed a piece of cake,
about 40min per side, a Mackeson Triple Stout in hand.
Another observation. The replacement bolt that comes in a boot repair
kit is indeed an Allen, not the 27mm OEM hex. Something had posessed me
to measure it as a 14mm Allen with my caliper (that damned beer! :) and
borrow it from my friend Mike Z.
Well guess what, the 14mm was 2 mm too small. Was I pissed! Coz Mike
lives in N. NJ. So I ransacked the local Sears searching for a 16mm
socket all to no avail. Put the old bolts in, torqued to 200Nm + 1/4
turn, figuring I would address this issue later after I would have
ordered the proper 16mm socket from McMaster or Snap-On.
Last night I had finally gotten enough common sence to ask myself why on
earth would Audi suddenly use a 16mm Allen. Out came my regular Audi
17mm Allen for the transmission oil drain plug. Surprise surprise, it
fit. I am such a moron!
