In my post I was just reporting what the prior owner had done.  I'm also
surprized that the flywheel 'needed' to be replaced.

I *think* this is replaced to replace the rear crank seal.  On the S4's
engine, it's recommended that this flange be replaced when replacing the
rear seal.
