IMHO, it much better to learn how to drive in a low-powered
car, and that goes for the track as well. Power makes up for
a lot of driving deficiencies that show up quite obviously when
you don't have the power to make up for blown corners.
It's also better to learn in a car that doesn't handle that
great, so you can push the limits more easily and at lower speeds.
I learned a lot about driving from driving quite a long series of
crappy rental cars, from Chevy Corsicas, Pontiac Grand Ams, Nissan
Sentras (they weren't that bad) and the like- it's much easier to
put a Grand Am into a 4-wheel drift at 30mph than it is a 993 turbo.
I wouldn't advise anyone to follow this course of action, but just
mentioned it to make the point.
In terms of safety, I feel that good, benign handling and good brakes
are essential for accident avoidance. Also, good headlights for night
driving. Proper shocks, european headlamps and proper brakes are
essential
upgrades to me and when I have kids of driving age, I'll make sure the
cars are properly equipped.
