Does anyone remember the TV commercial for the 740 turbo wagon? They showed
a Lamborghini Countach towing a U-Haul trailer on  a desert highway at high
speed, throwing up a huge dust cloud in its wake.   The copy was "This is
the general idea behind the Volvo 740 turbo wagon"

.....one of the greatest TV commercials of all time IMO.

Back in '93 I once took a rental 740 turbo wagon on US-1 from LA to SF
and back. What a car! You should see the eyes of the drivers whose cars
I would pass on that two laner serpentine ("Basic Instinct" was shot
exactly at that location). They would expect that lunatic (me) to drive
at least a red Porsche. Imagine their horror when instead they saw a
dull grey 7-seater Volvo soccermomwagon with the aerodynamics of a brick
flying sideways. I still remember those eyes...
:)

Came back to Philly, stopped by a Volvo dealership, wanted to buy me
one. Turned out that the 850 was then available either as a turbo, or as
a stick shift. Me: why???? Salesman: coz Volvo feels that a manual turbo
850 would be too fast.

Some logic... So I bought an '89 200TQ instead. Never regretted it.
