[s-cars] 100 octane gas vs. water injection

Hi all.
On the subject of racegas, I can now comment on my fancy schmancy new water
injection system, having had it for about three weeks on both racetracks and
the street. I used lots of Toluene, and racegas at tracks and on the street
in the past.
*** Disclaimer: I am not the most technical or mechanically inclined person.
Plus, my testing has been limited to a time where it's getting cold already
in NJ, so some of the summer benefits have not yet appeared. ***
OK, let's cut to the chase, the butt dyno. I can report that the car runs
exactly the way it does on race gas on a cold day, and better in some areas.
To be honest, I do not feel as if I have extra HP, but again, it's been both
cold and damp in NJ and at Watkins Glen, so I bet it would feel better in
the summer.
I have an Aquamist system, race pump, pressure accumulator for the water,
high-speed valve to create variable water flow, and drawing from washer
fluid tank. The nozzle is .9mm, threaded into a metal sleeve which was
"spliced" into the Samco intake hose about 3" before the actual intake
manifold (thanks Bob Pastore!). Water is activated by boost threshold (set
to 9 lbs) and fuel injection load (variable spray matches fuel injector duty
cycle).
Street: Full boost, all the time. And even better, full boost all the time
on gas as low as 89 octane. Amazing! No pinging, no cutting back of timing
as far as the butt dyno can tell (and mine is very sensitive....for dyno
use, you pervs).
Track: I used to run 100 octane at the track. In spite of that, and as Bob
Pastore can attest, the car felt noticeable slower at the end of each run
session compared to the first half. I timed once, and was getting 2:28's
initially, dropping to low 2:30's by end of session. Now, I run 93 pump gas
and water injection. While I have improved my times just from experience, I
get 2:26s at beginning of session, and 2:26s at end. On street gas! It's
very obvious that the car is still developing full boost at the end of each
session, or ~25 lbs, compared to before where last few laps I'd see 21/22 if
I was lucky.
Expect to go through 2/3rds of a washer fluid reservoir per lapping session,
and it should last about one tank of gas or more on the street (Pizzo,
YMMV). Extra benefit is that you can run straight water, water with ice for
track, or good ole' washer fluid (blue only), which is 50% methanol at 116
octane, and 50% water. So you get extra fuel to boot.
System cost me about $800 installed. I will earn that back in eight track
events by not buying race gas. No drawbacks as far as I can tell.
I am sure actual dyno tuning on flow, pressure, nozzle size, boost level,
etc. would yield even better results. But from my experience, this system
properly installed makes every day feel like a 50 degree damp day with race
gas in the tank.
Yeeeha!
