The temp gauge is fed from a constant voltage source on the board (IIRC 5
volts) and the resistance in the MFTS determines the reading on the gauge.
Anything external to the MFTS that adds resistance (bad IC connections as
noted by Taka, dirty MFTS connector, etc.) or off-spec voltage from the
constant voltage source due to bad IC connections or a bad IC voltage chip
will cause the gauge to read wrong. If you've replaced the MFTS and the
t-stat and still have a problem, clean the connectors, check the resistance
in the circuits, and check the voltage output to the MFTS.
You guys should get the proper temp gauge in your cars. All this talk of the
"third thick mark" and the "fifth hash mark" confuses the heck out of the
rest of us that have real numbers on the gauge :o)
If you have a 87 deg C thermostat in the car, the gauge should read 87 C.
Mine does. Makes things simple!

Cody-
In case that doesn't fix everything, I also suggest
that you take a look at the instrument cluster. My
gauge just went and died this year, I replaced the
MFTS, no fix, then replaced the printed circuit board
with the generous help of "Uncle Bob" and now it works
fine, although the board has now exhibited the infamous
bouncy speedo problem, intermittent odometer and intermittent
complaints of being out of gas, even with a full tank.
