For a time we had a GTI1.8t (mine, chipped only) and an S4tt in the family
(my wife's). If I caught it "right", I could stay w/the S4tt for a short
time on the Fwy, or quick blasts in the city. Of course, throw in a standing
start (or rain) and it was another story. Given it's "head", the S4 would
quickly lose the GTI. My GTI in this tune was significantly faster than a
GTIvr6.
Now we have 2 S4tts (mine an avant), and the performance is surprisingly
close :)
Final data point, I gave an '02 C4-cab a fright in the avant, which is
totally stock. This was from ~60-120 on the Fwy. He was in front & I was
chasing. The C4 was being driven in "anger", to lose the pesky wagon, which
he couldn't.
Does this mean I think the S4tt is as fast as a C4? No. It means that with
good timing it can stay w/some very fast cars. IMHO, the only "real" test is
a standing start run -- 1/4, 1/2, 1mi...
Final thing to consider re: the neu & "old" S4s is that weight becomes less
of an issue as speeds increase. At higher speeds it's more about HP vs drag.
I'm not sure how the CDs compare between the two, but it's something to

We went through several gears. Hard to be caught off boost in this
situation. Maybe the guy was just an idiot and shifted at 3500 rpms. No,
probably not.
