All this talk of wailing engines got me thinking back. How can there be a
"best"? There isn't, only personal favorites. My favorite engine notes that
I've heard, driven or witnessed, that make me all nutso are...
Audi
20v'er 7A on full song with correct pipe (141mph in a 90 quattro :))
Champion's Speedvision RS4s are pretty nice sounding...
Any 10v'er or 20v'er turbo ur-quattro, S4 or ? with a good rear pipe :)
720hp IMSA 90 GTO quattro with H. Stuck matting the pedal
Porsche
Porsche 917 on full song (two 911s at once!)
1984 Porsche Paris/Dakar 964 (959 test bed) 3.0ltr
Steve Beddor's Porsche RUF CTR at VCH
My old 1972 911RS 2.7 replica and that spine straightening twin outlet sport
pipe it had (whew did that 911 bring tears)
Carl Young's 914/6 3.2ltr at Virgina City Hillclimb
Ok I give up, ANY Porsche 6, 8, or 12 cyl engine
BMW
BMW M3 GTR
McLaren F1 or BMW v12
1996 M3 with a Dinan supercharger
Ford
Capri V6 2.8ltr w/twin pipes exiting on drivers side before rear tire. (ya
push rod, but it sounded glorious)
1969 Mustang GT350 with Webers lightin' it up through three gears, VCH
1971 Can-Am 7.0ltr cars at Laguna Seca
Ferrari
308BB Boxer at Virginia City Hillclimb, VCH
Ferrari 465 12cyl? Prodrive car at Sebring this last summer. What a wailer.
Bottom line is it must have at least 5 cylinders to sound good.
