Howdy-
OK. I'm throwing this one out here just to try and clear up any confusion
(mostly mine, of course, as usual). This from Rob Braunschweig (sp?) in der
mutherland, answering some of my Q's:
ALL CRBs have the wide first and hardened mainshaft, but ETKA and
Xxxxxxxxx's
website are wrong on a couple of things, but Xxxxxxx (names deleted to
protect the innocent) refuses to change his information.
1. The CRB was only installed on 95.5 up cars. Pre 95 RS2 all had CGRs. I've
seen 4 RS2s being parted out and all of them had CGRs in them. One even had
an "X" at the end of the serial number meaning it was exchanged by Audi
under warranty. All were pre 95 models.
2. There is no such thing as a wide first non-hardened mainshaft. ALL
mainshafts are hardened or they would wear out after 30,000 miles. This
according to the guy that desinged the things, Mr. Kluge! There are 2
different mainshafts. The 105H which is skinny in the front (I'll need to
take some pictures so that you can see what I mean) and one that is fat all
the way through. The skinny area allows the shaft to flex a bit and is used
behind the TDIs to allow the trans to absorb some of the shock when 400 ft
lbs goes through. The fat version is installed in gas engines.
3. All 4, 5, 6 and 8 cylinder bell housings for the 01E are the same and
will bolt up to any engine. Some cases have a pump (the V8 models, for
example), some don't. Otherwise, they are identical.
HTH anyone else out there pondering the DSY option. FWIW, Keith (OK, I'll
still talk to you Keith!) looked up some stuff on Euro EKTA and concluded
the RS4 uses the 105J 1st gear. If that can handle it, I'm fine with a DSY.
Pizzo on the other hand... 8-) (don't come shoot me or anything now
Sensitive Joey 8-) ).
