Let's not forget that the C4 pan and the type 44 pan are virtually identical,
so much so the exhausts bolt up to both/either in 20vt trim (btdt). WRT
"street-legal" I'll only say that you can spend a fraction of the price of a
951 AND keep the Scar. When you bugger a fender on a 951, you care, on a
type 44, you just smile and use another from any 84>91 5k/200.

Here in the midwest, we have a plethora of P cars and qcars with which to
compare, including a guy running a 16valve 951t, and several 911 flavors.
For over 5 years, this car (87 5ktq full cage) has been in the top pack.
With only 6psi of boost last year at Grattan, it was *the* fastest car in the
rain, period. I've since removed a lot of the gremlins and put the boost at
15psi, and fixed the suspension a bit. Next year, the 20vt RS2 motor will
debut, at which point, I'm fairly confident this car will accomplish it's
task with extreme prejudice.

951 is a great car, btdrovet, but in the context of quattros, the type 44tq
is a tough cookie to beat B4B.

WRT wheels and tires... I run 235/45 on 17x8.5 on my t44tqw mit big reds,
which I think is plenty enough tire. It clears front with removing some
trim, it clears rear with some fender rolling. We run a variety of 16's and
17's on the track car as well, and hardly afraid to "make" more room in the
back. Remember, on the 91 200, audi didn't flair, they bent sheet metal and
added cover up trim to the rear bumper.

No question in my mind how audi achieved the success they did with the type44
chassis. The nicest thing about driving it, is the ease and lack of
nervousness as it approaches the limit. Very 951 in character, and in the
rain, downright impossible to find something of equal calibre.

Last I heard, Scot Mockry was putting one together for track use as well.
Definitely don't write it off as silly, it's money thoughtfully spent. The
s4/6 in street trim? Forget it, you still have 4000lbs to heft around the
track, regardless of straight line power to weight ratio.

Other items on this thread.... FYI I turn the boost down from 22.5 to 15 on
track with my t44tqw. Bill, if you are running 27psi at RA, be prepared to
buy a motor, or just consider yourself lucky. That's a long heat cycle by
definition, and the main reason you got the incredulus notoriety. I've been
doing RA for 8years with Qclub, and saw many a q motor get roasted there,
towed a few back to the shop in fact. Check around, I wouldn't do this
often.

WRT wheelbase. As a rule wheelbase isn't necessarily a "bad" thing, since
you can use much heavier spring rates without sacrificing ride/quality or
performance.

Scott-
All very good points.

If you're talking about a type 44 rather than a C4, I can see where
you're
going with this.

However- two questions about the suitability of a type 44 as a dedicated
track car:

1. What is your solution to getting enough rubber down- wheelwell
clearance
is very tight, esp. w/ the steering knuckle clearance in the non-20v
type 44s
as well as the rear wheelwells?

2. Isn't a shorter wheelbase car more desirable for crisp turn-in?

Most of us are using street-legal cars, thus the suitability of a 951
over
the Audi- much better when comparing the two in street trim.
