Hi Fred,
Success.  I used your very valuable tutorial to change out the light bulb
for a red LED.
The only change I made was to use to surface mounted (parallel) 1K ohm
resistors, resulting in a total resistance of 512 ohms.

The light from the LED is about the same intensity as the other lamp
indicators.  So thank you very much for the great guidelines.  If you want
a picture of what the resistor mounting looks like, let me know.  I will
load the pics and send them to you.
