[s-cars] ignition problems

howdy all,
       i'm guessing my car is misfiring (or has a miss) because a) has a
buggedy-buggedy-type feel during take-off from stationary; b) the exhaust
smells like it's visited a hot, sulfur springs pool; c) my wife's ex-eagle
talon tsi had this same quality when it was running on three cylinders; and
d) my mechanically inclined friend said so after checking it out for a while.
 i need some advice please.  is it the coils?  the injectors seem fine.  or
is it a kaput sparkplug?  thanks in advance.  mike
