Maybe a stupid question but how do you test a new or old thermostat by removing it? Is it just a matter of heating up some water to 87C and seeing if it opens or not?

Thx

It seems there is a bit of controversy about the low temp readings. Some
have solved the problem with a new T-stat, some haven't. I'm desperately
in the second group with a long history of new T-stats and MFTS on
different Audis and VW. I never managed to go over the third thick mark
on the highway, whatever the T-Stat temp (82C or 87C).

But a T-Stat is cheap and it can be changed in half an hour. If your
T-Stat or your coolant is more than 2 years old, it's worth giving it a
chance, flushing the coolant at the same time.

The behaviour I was seeing was supecions as I had time where the
reservior was HOT and the Temp gauge read 0. Since replacing it the
gauge is more predictable although I am still a bit suspecious as the
temp gauge now reads at less then 1/4 most of the time more like
1/8th...although it was only around 24 degrees HIGH today.

Thoughts Gents...seem normal?

Cody,

I'm curious to know why you tried this first, as opposed to the
thermostat?
